“It would be very easy for the uninitiated to think of The Kut as an over-night success. Truth is, The Kut (multi-instrumentalist/ singer/songwriter/ one-woman-army Princess Maha) has been working hard for over a decade, and that graft is now starting to pay dividends with some well-earned plaudits. Fresh from a UK/Eire tour with Electric Six, and ahead of dates with pop punk priestesses Shonen Knife, ‘On My Own’ is another single pulled from the treasure trove that is The Kut’s sophomore album Grit.

Forget the Spice Girls and other such nonsense, The Kut is real girl power and, by taking tight control of all aspects of her own career, is powering a path to the top of rock’s family tree. Therefore, ‘On My Own’ is a pretty apt title for this single, it wastes little time on any fancy introductions, and hits the listener straight away with an insanely catchy melody. This is a track tailor made for a sweaty gig and you can almost hear a thousand voices singing along to the feisty refrain. This is grungy punk, but with a pop sensibility, and I don’t mean ‘pop’ in its negative context; The Kut know how to make the listener wait, like Pavlov’s dogs, before ringing the bell and letting all the goodness fly at the optimum moment.

At just over three-minutes ‘On My Own’ doesn’t overstay its welcome, but rest assured as it fades into the ether, you’ll be hitting ‘play’ again. Also included on the single is ‘Fun When You’re Winning’, a track which quickly became the soundtrack to the World Cup and featured on talkSPORT, SkySport and the Beeb, and it’s another delectable slab of pop-punk, and unlike the England football team, it never fails to hit the sweet spot. Another sure step towards global domination, ‘On My Own’ will quickly rise to the top of your playlist.”
